"Anymore" by Melanie C - Single Review

While rumors swirled of a possible Spice Girls reunion last year, to coincide with the successful 90s girl group's upcoming 20th anniversary, former members Victoria Beckham and Melanie C quickly rejected the idea of the original five ever coming together again. Melanie C sited personal reasons in a magazine essay for her unfortunate decision, however, with the recent release of "Anymore", a darker, disco-tinged taste of her seventh studio album, the real reason could have been to focus on her own slate of new solo material.

"Anymore" finds the artist formerly known as Sporty Spice reinventing her sound and image once again, this time around showcasing sultry vocals with the support of edgy, dance-worthy, synth-pop beats. The breakup anthem initially sounds to be a soul-crushing revisit of founder memories for Melanie C, but when the joyous chorus rolls around, it's clear the track is the soundtrack of new found liberation. The artist is moving past the heartbreak, to find that light at the end of a tunnel.

Everything about the production is larger than life, an apparent explosion of pent up frustration and welcomed satisfaction from the artist. With a vocal performance that bares similarities to powerhouse Anastacia, Melanie C commands attention as she shakes the pain away. "I've been trying to lose myself in the light, trying to find myself in the night, without you, can't find you," she boldly belts, admitting precious time was spent dwelling over something not too special to begin with.

The U.S. audience may have completely ignored Melanie C's entire solo career ever since the euphoric and near-perfect "I Turn To You" back in 1999, however, "Anymore" finds the artist toying with a slightly more infectious dance/pop sound, after leaving it behind for a rougher, rock approach on her follow up efforts. For her upcoming seventh album, the artist is clearly taking inspiration from today's music trends yet still adding those precious details that make the sound all her own.

She may not be rejoining the Spice Girls, but it is evident that Melanie C will never forget those prominent days in the 90s. Those days are still influencing her career decades down the road. "Anymore" will unfortunately remain a solid gem untouched by many music lovers but it succeeds in continuously pushing the ever-expanding boundaries of the artist while building extremely positive buzz for an upcoming collection of work. It's nice to see her search for a heartbreak distraction leads to infectious new tunes!
