Watson's Shoes in Pickford is Closing its Doors after 43 Years - 9&10 News

Posted: 09 Jul 2019 12:25 PM PDT

We want to recognize an Upper Peninsula shoe store for more than 112 years of service and just over 4 decades of that under the most recent owners.

Watson's Shoes in Pickford is closing its doors after 43 years.

That's when Bill and Dorothy Mcdowell took over the store from the Watson family in 1976.

Earlier this week, they posted on Facebook, they will be retiring.

The original store, Taylor Grocery and Shoe Store, opened up in 1907.

The store has gone through a few changes over the years, but one thing that did not change is the customer loyalty and personal service.

The store will officially close August 15.

If there are any shoes left over at that time, they will be donated to charity.

Jamestown shoe drive ends - Jamestown Sun

Posted: 10 Jul 2019 04:00 AM PDT

The Jamestown Dollars for Scholars (JDFS) Shoe Drive which ran from January through May of 2019, was a huge success thanks to the

generosity of Jamestown and surrounding communities, organizers said.

During the drive, 7,400 pairs of new and gently used shoes (all sizes and all types from athletic to snow boots, dress shoes to tennis shoes, flip flops, cleats, etc.) were collected and bagged by school, community and area volunteers. On June 8, the Jamestown Blue Jay football team helped load all 296 bags of into the semi and they began their journey to developing nations.

Over 30 schools, churches and businesses in the Jamestown area served as collection sites during the drive. Additionally, shoes were

collected at a Blue Jay basketball game, Jamestown Area Childcare Services, March Madness Shoe Drive, St. James Basilica vacation Bible school, Jamestown Middle School Primetime challenge and Jamestown High School Day of Service.

Many residents went above and beyond to encourage their book club, co-workers, neighbors, Bible study, family

and friends to clean out closets and donate their shoes. The Jamestown Volunteer Center provided assistance in collecting

the shoes from the collection locations. R..M Stoudt provided storage space for the shoes.

Lincoln Elementary was the top school collection site donating over 600 pairs of shoes. Students earned an extra half hour of recess for their donation efforts.

Every year, 600 million pairs of shoes end up in landfills. The 7,400 pairs of shoes collected will be sold by micro-businesses in other countries. JDFS will be paid for the number of pounds of shoes donated and the funds raised will be used to provide scholarships to JHS seniors.

To learn more about Jamestown Dollars for Scholars, contact Elaine Hegland at 320-4615 or DeAnn Ament at 701-391-1386
